Natural Baby Care

Natural baby care products offer a chemical-free alternative to commercially manufactured baby care products. There are thousands of chemicals approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that are commonly used in baby toiletries. Many of these chemicals may pose health hazards or irritate your baby's skin.

Babies are susceptible to toxins and pollutants of all kinds. Manufacturers have created many man-made chemicals which are found everywhere. What may not bother you as an adult may bother your baby. Natural baby care products work just as well as store bought baby care products, but without the additives and preservatives.

Natural baby care products are usually handmade and free of preservatives. They will not last as long as commercially prepared products, but that means you buy what you need and no more.

Many natural products are free of sodium lauryl sulfate, parabens and other chemical preservatives, artificial dyes, and fragrances that are known carcinogens and irritants. Natural baby care products tend to be made from a combination of vegetable and seed oils, natural emollients, castile soap, vitamin E, aloe vera, herbs to heal and protect the skin, and scented with a variety of essential oils.

Common ingredients include non-solvent extracted grapeseed oil, sweet almond oil, or safflower oil; non-irritating essential oils of vanilla, coriander, lavender, and chamomile; and natural emollients like shea butter or avocado butter. Natural ingredients such as hemp oil and beeswax are making their way into natural baby care products for their safe, non-irritating properties.

If there is a commercially prepared baby care product, you can probably find a natural baby care equivalent. Natural baby care products range from baby soaps, baby lotions, diaper rash creams, insect repellant, and healing balms to protect, soothe and heal cradle cap, minor rashes, scrapes, and burns.

Many parents turn to natural products when commercially prepared products don't work. Ingredients in commercial products may be creating or contributing to problems such as skin rash, eczema, or allergies. Many parents find once they switch to natural baby care products their concerns improve or disappear over time.

Naturally, your results may vary. Natural baby care products work differently on different babies. You may need to try a few different brands and ingredient combinations before you find a brand of products that you like and that works well for your baby.
