Crib Mattress Covers
An extra layer of protection to ensure your crib mattress will survive the test of time is always a welcome addition to your crib ensemble. Crib mattress covers are designed to protect your crib mattress from spills, ensuring your mattress stays dry and mildew-free.
Some crib mattress covers are capable of absorbing up to 4 lbs of liquid. Most are 100% waterproof, with a polyester or cotton top and a vinyl backing to protect your crib mattress. Some crib mattress covers are made of alpaca, sheep's wool, or merino lambs wool. Wool is highly absorbent and preferred by many, but are a risk to those allergic to wool or lanolin.
Newer crib mattress covers are reversible. They are constructed with the vinyl waterproof layer in between two soft outer layers for your baby's comfort. These mattress covers lessen the annoying, loud rubbing noise of the vinyl that occurs with most mattress covers.
Most crib mattress covers are stain resistant, flame resistant, machine washable, and machine dryable. Some covers are quilted and sanitized to be anti-microbial, offering extra protection against mold, mildew, and odor-causing bacteria.
Crib mattress covers are available in two styles: pads and sheets. Crib mattress pads are rectangular pads that you center on top of your crib mattress and under the fitted sheet. Most pad-style covers are simple flat pads that are held in place by the fitted sheet. Some flat pads have loops of elastic at the corners that wrap around the corners of the mattress to keep the pad in place. Some newer pad-style crib mattress covers are made extra large so you can cut them down to the size you need.
The sheet-style mattress cover is shaped like a fitted sheet from your normal crib bedding. Sheet-style covers have elasticized-cotton corners and waterproof protection on the top side of the sheet only. Many parents use the sheet-style mattress cover to replace the fitted sheet, especially if the cover is made of 100% cotton or hypo-allergenic wool. A cotton or wool cover is soft enough to place against your baby's skin and the fabric is breathable. Sheet-style covers are easy and convenient to use without the bother of an additional fitted sheet.
Crib mattress covers are quite economical and easy to find in a wide variety of styles and fabrics. The longevity they add to your crib mattress and the ease they give you when dealing with yet another leaky diaper at 3:00 in the morning is worth the expense. Many parents double-up, not for added protection, but for ease of use. Covering your crib mattress in a sheet-style cover is always a good idea as it offers the maximum amount of protection for your mattress. Add a fitted sheet, then place smaller mattress covers or receiving blankets over the fitted sheet and under your baby. When spit up or a leaky diaper hits, you only have to replace the smaller mattress cover and you can be back in bed in less than 3 minutes. Try it, you'll be happy you did!
